SWEET FAVES (or fava beans of the dead)

Description

Fave dei morti are small, soft cookies typical of many regions of Italy where they are traditionally prepared for the All Saints’ Day holiday. There are numerous recipes for fave dei morti but the main ingredient for all of them is almond.

At the turn of November 1 and 2, legend has it that the dead come to visit the world of the living, who, to cheer them up, prepare sweets. Hence the custom of making sweet beans or precisely “Beans of the Dead” to remember departed loved ones, but also to welcome them!
